A very senior partner would “mentor” juniors (from clerks to associates) by sitting them in his office and quizzing them about the nuances of legislation. If you didn’t know the answer, he would bring the printed legislation and instruct you to find the provision in front of him so you could read it aloud. He would then ask you to interpret the legislation on the spot and grill you if you got it incorrect. These mentoring sessions would go anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. People would become flustered, very stressed, would cry, and would feel attacked. This was a daily occurrence for at least one team member. One law clerk who clerked in the team gave negative feedback of their overall experience because they witnessed this bullying. HR made enquiries with several team members and when they found out who was the bully, quickly quietened.
